Abstract:
Anyons are quasiparticles theorized to appear in low-dimensional condensed matter systems, with peculiar features including fractional statistics which is intermediate between those for bosons and fermions. In this talk, focusing on a two-dimensional ultracold gas of trapped neutral atoms, we will explore how signatures of anyonic statistics can be extracted via simple density measurements, provided that the atoms are prepared in a strongly-correlated state that is analogous to the fractional quantum Hall state of electrons.

Short Bio: After obtaining his PhD degree in physics from Bilkent University in 2010, Onur Umucalılar conducted postdoctoral studies in BEC Center, Trento, Italy and University of Antwerp, Belgium for four years. After returning to Turkey, he continued his research at Koç University through a TÜBİTAK fellowship till 2017. He has been a faculty member at the Department of Physics, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University since 2017.
