Abstract:
I will show that the environment, modelled as a thermal bath,
which is usually viewed as a nuisance or a disaster for any quantum-
mechanical application, can in fact be an asset for a wealth of
applications. In particular, it can provide useful information on dynamical
processes, serve as a quantum-information link, promote (rather than
destroy) quantum entanglement and be a source of useful work or
refrigeration. These applications require appropriate control and
engineering of the bath.
