Higher dimensional generalizations of quantum Hall effect (QHE), which share several similar features of the 2-D QHE, have been a continually appearing theme in contemporary theoretical physics in the past decade or so. Initially, these investigations were motivated by ideas emerging form quantum field theories as well as string physics. Recent research also indicates that QHE on spheres may also be used to model A-class and A-III class topological insulators in higher dimensions. In this talk, after providing a pedagogical introduction to the subject, via reviewing the basics of QHE and formulation of QHE on the 2-sphere by Haldane, we will consider the Landau problem for charged particles on all odd-dimensional spheres, in the background of certain suitable gauge field configurations. We will determine the energy spectrum and wave functions of the relevant Landau and Dirac-Landau Hamiltonians and discuss some elementary properties of the LLLs. We also plan to remark upon several emerging geometrical features of the problem, which appear to be of physical interest.

Bio: Seçkin Kürkcüoğlu received his B.Sc. degree in Physics and Minor in Mathematics from METU in 1997. He completed his M.Sc. at METU in 1999 and obtained his Ph.D. degree in Physics from Syracuse University in 2004. He held postdoctoral research positions first as a fellow of the Irish Research Council for Science Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) at the School of Theoretical Physics in Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and subsequently at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in the Leibniz University of Hannover. He received Syracuse University Graduate School Doctoral Prize in 2005 and the TÜBA GEBİP Award in 2011. Since September 2009, he is a faculty member at METU Department of Physics.
