Abstract:
Rogue (freak) waves can be described as high amplitude waves with a height bigger than two times the significant waveheight in a random wavefield. They can be observed in hydrodynamics, optics, quantum mechanics, plasmas, Bose-Einstein condensation, acoustics and finance, just to name a few. It is natural to expect that in a medium whose dynamics can are governed by the nonlinear equations such as the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, rogue waves can also emerge. Although rogue waves are generally desired in an optical medium, it is crucial to detect and avoid them in marine environment before they become evident in time. Potential early detection strategies in 1D and 2D are using inverse scattering transform theory, Grassberger-Procaccia nonlinear time series algorithm, measuring the Fourier and wavelet spectra both classically and via compressive sensing.

Bio: Cihan Bayındır received the B.S. degree, with honors rank, in civil engineering from the Boğaziçi University, İstanbul, Turkey, in 2007, the M.S. degree in ocean engineering with a minor in mathematics from the University of Delaware, Newark, in 2009, where he was a research assistant for an underwater acoustics project supported by the Office of Naval Research at the University of Delaware.

He received the M.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering with minors in mathematics and mechanical engineering and the Ph.D. degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, in 2011, and in 2013, respectively where his research on remote sensing and synthetic aperture radar signal processing research was funded by the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Currently he is an assistant professor at the department of civil engineering of the Işık University where he teaches at the graduate and undergraduate level . His research interests are nonlinear waves and dynamics, synthetic aperture radar and sonar imaging, underwater acoustics, fluid mechanics and numerical mathematics.
